Router

Routers interconnect logical networks by forwarding information to other networks based upon IP addresses.

A networking device that can send (route) data packets from one local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to another, based on addressing at the network layer (Layer 3) in the open systems interconnection (OSI) model Scope Note: Networks connected by routers can use different or similar networking protocols. Routers usually are capable of filtering packets based on parameters, such as source addresses, destination addresses, protocol and network applications (ports).

A LAN/WAN device operating at Layers 1 (physical), 2 (data link), and 3 (network) of the OSI 7 Layer Reference Model.

A hardware device that connects two or more networks and routes incoming data packets to the appropriate network.
