Distributed denial of service (DDoS)

A type of attack that makes a computer resource or resources unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DDoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a group that intends to affect an institution's reputation by preventing an Internet site, service, or application from functioning efficiently.
