An environmental or contextual attribute — specifically the clock hour at which an access request occurs — used as one input in an authorization or authentication decision. In attribute-based access control (ABAC) frameworks, NIST SP 800-53 classifies it as an *environmental* attribute, distinct from organizational attributes such as job function or resource attributes such as document classification, that can constrain which system access is permitted. In risk-based and adaptive authentication, NIST SP 800-63 similarly treats it as an environmental signal — alongside IP address, geolocation, and transaction type — evaluated dynamically at the moment of an access or authentication request. In practice, it is paired with related temporal and locational attributes (day of week, point of origin) to form a composite access condition, so that a policy can, for example, permit a session only during business hours or flag a login that falls outside a user's normal usage pattern.
