A hardware or software mechanism — such as a firewall, router, gateway, guard, or encrypted tunnel — deployed at a logical or physical network boundary to monitor, control, and mediate the flow of communications between zones of differing security policy. What distinguishes it is its dual function: facilitating the adjudication of different interconnected system security policies and/or providing information system boundary protection. The boundary in question may be an authorization boundary for a specific system, the organizational network boundary, or a logical boundary defined by the organization. In practice, systems connect to external networks or information systems only through managed interfaces consisting of boundary protection devices arranged in accordance with an organizational security architecture, and NIST guidance requires that boundary protection devices monitor and control communications at the external boundary of the system and at key internal boundaries within the system.
