Information flow control, for example, may be implemented in software or hardware; hardware-enforced approaches are considered more robust because unauthorized reconfiguration cannot be achieved without physical access to the device. The distinguishing property is that the policy constraint is architecturally fixed in silicon or physical circuitry, making it resistant to software-layer attack, privilege escalation, or misconfiguration.
