A set of protocols that allow systems to communicate information about the state of services on other systems Scope Note: For example, ICMP is used in determining whether systems are up, maximum packet sizes on links, whether a destination host/network/port is available. Hackers typically use (abuse) ICMP to determine information about the remote site.
